In the beginning.....
The story of Juno Olives started in 2001, when Karen and Ian Juno began to plant the first of nearly 2000 trees on a block of land originally used for growing apples. It was tough going, with many large rocks brought to the surface whilst digging holes for the trees. Some of these rocks have been used to make the front wall of the property on State Highway 2. This planting phase took their whole family nearly 18 months to complete.
There are hundreds of varieties of olives worldwide and there are 7 planted in this grove: Picual, Picholine, Frantoio, Leccino, Pendolino, Moraiolo and Koroneilki.
Since the olive trees were planted many other fruit and nut trees have been added, the bounty from which we happily share when visitors come.
In 2006 the first extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) was produced and the grove's first award was won at the New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Oils awards was won, a silver. Since then the grove has won many awards over the years including two Gold Medals at the World Olive Oil Competition in New York.
